Essential Gear for Skiing in Eastern Canada’s Chilly Climate

Having skied across North America, from Eastern and Western Canada to Vermont, New York, and Utah, I’ve noticed how much gear choice shapes the experience in Eastern Canada, especially in the colder months, which I think offer the best conditions. The challenge is finding the right equipment for cold, humid climates like Mont Tremblant, since conventional sports stores rarely stock it. January and February in particular call for unique gear prep. I’ll have a clearer comparison after skiing in Europe, but for now, here’s my take on the essentials.

Item # 1: Airhole Airtube

I love my Airtube. The -10°C model is my go-to, perfect for long cardio sessions in the glades even on -30°C days when body heat builds quickly. If you prefer groomers on frigid days, consider the model rated for lower temps. Its versatility makes it wearable year-round, so you avoid buying multiples. My wife, still learning, prefers two options: a polar fleece for -20°C and a lighter one for -5°C. No mask stops fog entirely, but the Airtube helps since you exhale through a hard vent. In drier West Coast or warmer Vermont conditions, I found google fogging much less of an issue, and sometimes I did not even need a mask (depending on time of year).

Item # 2: Boot Glove

For extremely cold days in Eastern Canada, you might find the boot glove indispensable. Regardless of the quality of your boots, your toes can get cold. With the boot glove, I’ve managed all-day skiing stints without needing indoor breaks. Even with my high-end boots, a bit of cold air sneaks in, but the glove ensures my feet remain warm and dry.

In summary, everyone eventually settles into a rhythm, finding gear that’s tailor-made for their needs. For those unaccustomed to the icy, cold, and humid conditions of Eastern Canada, consider my suggestions as a starting point. It’s essential to remember that frostbite and windburn are real threats. In the end, layering up and ensuring full protection for your face and extremities is the most important part of skiing in cold weather conditions. Stay safe out there!
